Dash lights inoperative

i've got a 1982 rx7

here's the story. i just got my car back together after being painted. had engine bay done as well so everything was removed from the engine bay. i BELIEVE i've put everything back where it should go. now when i turn my lights on the dash lights dont work. all the lights for the idiot cluster belown the tach work fine, turn signals work fine, all the gauges on my dash work fine. just the wonderful orange glow of the numbers doesnt light up. i've pulled it out and checked that everything was connected. i even replaced all the bulbs in the back of it today. still nothing. underneath the dash everything appears to be hooked back up except there are 2 loose wires with female connections on the end. they come off the main harness (the one that goes across the firewall towards the center of the car and then up behind the dash where your right knee would be if you were sitting in the drivers seat). would these have anything to do with it? i dont see where they could go to. or did i maybe miss something in the engine bay thats somehow linked to those lights? any help would be much appreciated cuz its a bit of a bitch to drive at night like this. thanks.

dave

Sounds like you might want to check your connection on the dimmer switch. My 85 did this (wires inside were bad) and with a new switch, worked again. If you want to check your switch, you can take out your switch and unplug it. Get a short piece of wire and put the ends connecting the bottom two contacts. If it was in the switch, your lights should come on. If not, have fun checking your wiring!

Check your fuses, either one is blown or you have the dimmer dial control for the lights unplugged.

I blew out my dimmer switch thanks to a bad cig lighter assembly. I replaced the lighter and the dimmer switch. It fixed the problem.

Also - make sure you DO NOT plug in the two loose wires under the shifter area. They look like the are supposed to connect to each other, but that will short out a fuse or dimmer switch.
