BC Damaged Rear Axle

So... I made a mistake today.

Despite reading up on how to remove the collar and bearing off of the rear axle of a Gsl-se rear end, ensuring to leave a bit behind and breaking it free, I managed to screw it up. I've now got a diagonal cut approximately 2 to 3 millimeters deep and 2 centimeters long where the collar was. A combination of poor light and impatience did me in.

Can the axle be salvaged, or is it now junk?

Luckily, this was only a spare rear end that I bought for the LSD.

Thanks

Dave

It will be fine, half the time when i pull axles out of used rear ends they have that same "mark" in them. Deburr the edges and slide your new bearing/collar on.

If there's any chance the gouge leaves a leak path for gear oil, you may want to fill it with sealant before you press on the collar. The same goes for the inside of the axle housing where the oil seal seats.

Thanks guys. I'm curious though as to what kind of sealant you mean? Something like JB Weld that would then have to be sanded down, or a liquid of some kind? This is the first rear end I've taken apart, so this is all new to me.

Merry Christmas

I was thinking RTV. I haven't actually done it, but I suggest this:

1. Clean the root of the axle with a solvent (paint thinner, etc)
2. Spread a thin coat of RTV over the surface the bearing and collar will seat on, filling the gouge
3. Press the bearing and collar onto the axle
4. Wipe off any excess RTV
5. Allow it to cure per the instructions on the tube before putting in service

if ur gonna use RTV, it would be smart to get the RTV designed for exposure to gear oil/diff fluid. I always smear a very light coat on the inside of the axle where the bearing slips in, and the axle flange as well...just cause leaks **** me off
