Custom Sub box for 1st gen no $$$ spared

Thought I would share a work in progress with my custom box and amp rack. The box will be housing a 12" JBL w6 powered by an alpine pdx 1.1000. The separates up front are boston pro60's powered by an alpine pdx 2.150. The box will be wrapped in the same vinyl as the lower part of the doors. I will post more as we progress. Enjoy

Nice set-up.

TeamSMS 01-31-08 11:57 PM

what kind of door speakers did you use? Also did you keep the speakers in the kick panels in the front as well?

Boston Pro60 6 1/2 separates. No speakers in the kick panels. The panels have been covered in vinyl for a clean look.

looks not bad, hard to see if you fiberglassed the back of the box or not. Id recommend somehow making it "an enclosure" vs just a slot for the sub to sit it.

I know in these cars its hard but itd definetly be worth the effort if you can figure it out and youll get way less rattle and way better sound if you can manage

make sure to take more pics (less blurry if possible) and let us know your progress/how it sounda

"looks not bad" like you could make a better enclosure? I think not.

The back is fiberglassed and it is a sealed enclosure. The entire trunk area and doors are covered in a dynomat material to eliminate any rattles. This is just the start and only the box completed. Amp rack and cover plates are in the works and should be all done next week.

Sorry about the pics they where from my iphone and it was starting to get dark out. Should have more pics tomorrow.

joecoolly14 02-01-08 12:56 AM

Not a huge fan of the tweeter placement... But other than that... it look really good...Did you use anything behind the door panel for the speakers or did you just screw them in??

djessence 02-01-08 01:06 AM

Well actually custom sub enclosures is what ive been doing the past 4 years, so yes i think i could make a better enclosure if i tried.

In my saying it looks not bad i was taking into consideration that it was not in fact an enclosure which you have corrected saying it is. Its tough to tell that the back is in fact fiberglass and not just metal and obviously the dynomat will eliminate alot of rattle.

Thanks for the feedback and your insight. Just hate it when people chime in with no experience and knowledge of what they are talking about. With your experience its appreciated. :)

Hit Redline 02-01-08 10:29 AM

^^^^^ what's your new system look like?

TeamSMS 02-01-08 12:19 PM

We installed my friends system into my fb...two JL audio 12" w3's powered by a sony 1000watt amp. No dynamat in the car b/c it was just for fun since his car is in the shop right now....but it rattled the back window really bad...how did you get rid of that?

Glazedham42 02-01-08 12:24 PM

While I'm not a fan of weighing cars down with stereo systems, and emptying my pockets in the process I still have to appreciate the hard work that you are putting in here. Great job, and keep up the hard work. Looks like it is going to turn out very nicely once its finished. :bigthumb:

damn thats a nice set-up john...keep up the good work!

Hit Redline 02-01-08 04:32 PM

That is nice John. You must be pretty good with math and know your way around a saw or two.

What are you running besides the sub? Speakers and power.

John64 02-01-08 04:52 PM

Thanks guys, I did not mean to highjack this post.

joecoolly14 02-02-08 08:59 PM

Just screwed into the door panels. The doors have been treated throughly with dynomat. Here is a better pic of the door speaker set up.

Oh, you got me. We searched around to find someone else's build because we have no creativity of our own. Dude don't flatter your self. None of us even saw your build until you posted here on my thread. I am sure you are not the first to build a system with the same basic style. Yes some things are similar in placement but wait until the finish project. It will blend with the interior instead of looking like something is stuck in as an after thought. :rlaugh:

We are reaching a level of detail you could only dream of.

My installers response to your post.

Looks nice, wish i had the time to do that much work..........

As far as telling John - "We are reaching a level of detail you could only dream of."

and then just screwing the front speakers into the door, well you just blew your level of "Detail" any idiot can screw a speaker into a door. So that sets off your crews skills. Have fun with your cheap build. :)

John64 02-03-08 03:56 PM

Redline, that was not a dig on you, but I guess you can take it as one now. Go ahead and seach his entire forum since the beginning and you will not find one build like mine. This includes all three builds I have put in this car. As Max stated, I have yet to see your level of detail you are speaking of, screwing a speaker into a factory location is not high end! I will put mine next to your professionaly installed system anyday, at 1/4 of the cost of yours.

im curious, if you not using screws to attach a speaker, then how do you attach it?

im not sure how many first gens you have owned but the door on any 79-85 rx is not the stock location :)
your install is nice tho...

joecoolly14 02-03-08 10:58 PM

I have read over Johns build up when I got my first 7.. The time and attention to detail is amazing. Ive installed my fair share of systems... Yours looks good but +1 for John

Your right any idiot could just screw the speakers in, but that is not what we did here. I may have not understood the other posters question. The doors had to be cut, we dynomatted the doors completely, baffled the speaker enclosures, used a spacer ring, and sealed with silicone, and then they were screwed in. So if thats cheap what would you be doing?

John sure seems to be a dig. You post "not bad" and I have done this and looks like you are just coping me. Instead you could be showing some 7 love and offering some suggestions.

Car is not finished but you can see the detail in the door pic. Looks factory in my opinion.

Since when are speakers in the doors a factory location for a 1st gen?

I would think this would hit your leg when driving. Looks is a subjective thing, just like taste.

As far as posting pics I recommend using photobucket. Its really easy and lets you post larger pics.
