Crazy Porting Thoughts

If I were to streetport my 1985 RX-7 gs (12A engine) rather than add a supercharger to it, what would my horsepower and torque be? I am running a cold air intake and a catless Racing Beat Full Exhaust system.

Next, if I were to install a supercharger on my rx-7 without porting it, what would my horsepower and torque be? This would be using the Atkins Supercharger.

I believe these two options I have listed are my only options for I do not want to get rid of my Racing Beat Exhaust System. I just spent about $600 on it and I am not about to ditch the headers to install a turbo. At least I don't feel like doing that yet.

Finally, what other supercharger would be compatable with the RX-7 I have? Could I go to a junk yard and find one off a trans am or something? Or could I buy a Paxon one and install it that way? Would I then need to change my nikki carb to a Holley? Thanks for your time.

I hate to say this, but it really depends on many different factors how much power you will make.

AFAIK a well sized Streetport will get you close to 200HP and around 140-160 ft-lbs of torque, but only if you get a good carb, and have it tuned right.

The Camden SC that Atkins sells for 2k, running "safe" 6lb of boost, non intercooled, stock ports, and the holley carb they also sell ($300 or so if I remember right), you'd be looking at around a 30% over what you'd expect on a stockport with exhaust and a carb. So giving a generous estimation,I'd say about the same 200HP, but with 190-210 ft-lbs of torque. The SC would clearly be more fun/fast, because of the power through-out the powerband, but for the price tag of nearly 3k installed, personally I'd choose the porting (and go bridgeport), and save myself the headaches.

Oh, and using another SC is a possiblity of being better and cheaper than the Atkins Camden, but fabrications skills required in excess to get anything to work. Stirling said he was working with some other SC, do a search on his past posts conserning supercharging.

It also depends on which exhaust system you have. If you only have the single pipe exhaust, porting it would require and exhaust change to see the most HP potential. Hence the reason they sell different kits .
