crankshaft seal

Started our 85 12a yesterday to drive it a some, was like 28 degrees outside and when I started it exhaust had alot white smoke and started dumping oil out of the hole in the transmission that seems to be inspection hole for the flywheel the oil has alot of water in too so im thinking the crankshaft seal gave way but not sure why water was in the oil.The car still idles smoothly so Looking for some input on what to buy to fix this before I pull the motor out so I can put it back together as soon as old parts are removed

Uh-oh...

I am by no means an expert (there are plenty on this forum tho and hopefully they'll weigh in), but it sounds like a water seal has gone bad. They run around the inside and outside of the housings and bound the water passages from the combustion chamber (inner seal), and the outside of the engine (outer seal). If the inner one went bad, then you'd definitely see white smoke (water vapor) in the exhaust and depending how bad, water in the oil. Inner ones that leak allow water into the combustion chamber.

If you saw a lot of oil in the flywheel area then you may have lost a dowel pin seal (maybe? Not at all sure about that), but likely the rear main. There are several small (about 1" diameter) oil seals on the irons, and maybe one of those have gone bad but again, that is an uneducated guess on my part.

I know I got mine running after sitting and not being started for 3 years and it was only a matter of time before the seals went (seven miles in my case). I had the dreaded white smoke too, and it didn't smell overly "oil-like", so I suspected I lost a water seal. Had no choice but to take it out and crack it open. Seals were dry and stiff. I had other issues too, but from the sounds of it, I think you may have two seal problems.

You might try to troubleshoot it, but to me is sounds as though it may be time to yank it out and tear it down. Very easy - if a beginner like me can do it, anyone can.
