Just got my 7 this weekend and it had an oil leak come to find out the cooler is cracked and it doesn't look like a fun jobto replace. cheapest part i have found is $85 at advanced auto. one side of the mounts is broken/loose so its been hanging there bouncing around for awhile i guess. Anyone ever changed one before? i have the books gonna look at it tonight and tomorrow. but anytips would be good and if anyone knows where i can get one cheaper let me know.

According to my trusty Haynes, it just unbolts and drops straight down. And everyone is going to tell you DON'T overtighten the hose fittings.

and I'm referring to a front-mounted-under-the-radiator type of oil cooler.

A lot of them crack around the fittings. I had mine (in the '79) welded...still holding strong after 4 or 5 years.

NO, hoses are expensive, my auto parts store didnt have it and custom jobs for one hose are $100. somewhere had them for 100/set of short and long. i'll go look

the actual install is a 2 man job and make sure that advance has the right part. on mazdatrix, they are like $450

yeah i looked there and couldn't believe they were that much. i called auto zone and they wanted $100. My neibor is a car mech and gets parts cheap so i will see what he can get me. i know i am going to need brake rotors too. are there power slots cheap or are factory discs pretty good on these cars? any kind of good brake pads? THanx , i am not new to cars just new to these cars let a lone foreign jobs. my whole drive way is Mopar! I am trying to do this on the cheap since i only bought this as commuter transpo. well thanx guys.

why is it a two man job? only room for one. Book says oil capacity is 5.5 qaurts, is that including the cooler? and how do you change the oil and get the oil from the cooler out?

you know i was looking at the auto parts web sites and they were all showing just aftermarket coolers noting like stock at all. thanx for the tip on atalanta RX7.
ok where do i go to find out what makes my GSL-SE so "special" and hard to get parts for. and where can i find out all the acronyms you guys use , mean? like FD FB stuff liek that, and other stuff i haven't even seen yet? thanx

oh yeah and its fun so far having the bigger 13B and fuel injection GSL-SE , parts are real fun finding so far....lol it always happens this way to me, i tryied to get a main stream not one off car so its wasy to get parts but no i have to have the "special" model..LMAO... oh well, i am sure it will be nice when its all working right. actually other than the oil leak it wasnt running bad. I do like the fuel injection too no carb to mess with.

cool thanx. i kinda figured i had a FB. Jeeps are the same way have special designations for them. I have an '82 CJ-7, built not bought and its for off road only. they have CJ 76-86, YJ 87-96 an TJ 97-present. thats just the "wranglers" the real jeeps lol . anyway thanx for the help.

if i were you, i would go new, not used. they probably have been sitting for 20+ years and you dont want to do it again!

About 10 years back my oil cooler started leaking my mechanic took it out and had it welded. Ithink I only paid like 180$ for the whole job.

not trying to thread jack, but is there a way to check if a FMOC is leaking before hooking it into your oil system? Thanks

There is no test that I know of. The best way I guess would be to block of the outlet and somehow pressurize the oil cooler with compressed air to around 80psi. This would most likely show any leaks.

I had a leaky oil cooler on my 7 when I first go it. I tried tightening the inlet hose a little and it tighted up a little, then went loose then tight again as I was turning it, all within a 1/4 turn. I didn't think much of it as I didn't put much torque on the wrench when tightening it as not to crack the cooler. Turns out, I did crack the oil cooler. After I got it "tightened", I started the engine and it started pissing out oil everywhere from the top fitting (excuse the language). I tried to have the cooler welded, but with no success. I guess the aluminum just kept decintigrating as they tried to weld it.

I went out and picked up a used cooler from a guy about an hour away from me. Got it home, put it on my car, and tightened down the fittings. Started the engine and there was a small leak, but nothing I couldn't deal with. I decided to keep from tightening the fitting and leave it as is.

I've now got an FC oil cooler on my car with stainless steel braided lines. Doesn't leak a bit. The only reason I have the FC cooler is because it came on the 84 parts car I got the streetported engine from.

Always use 2 wrenches when installing the hoses. Otherwise, you will crack it.

Wow, I'd like to see that new $85 cooler from advanced?!?!

Also use a new crush washer when installing the lines on the cooler, and what wacky said. Napa has the crush washer, I have the part number in my tool box if u need. No one else that I could find carries it other than Mazdatrix/ISC.

As someone else said without a doubt the Mazdatrix ss hoses at $100 are the way to go.

They don't go bad, just flush and play. You just want to make sure that the guy you buy it from didn't have some massive motor failure and it's full of metal. Some racers install an oil filter between the motor and the cooler. They expect the motors to give out and don't want to trash out thier coolers and accusump systems.
