Could I have bent the Axle?

Well got new brake calipers on the front and installed (rotors turned and pads) so I took it to a church parking lot (big) and was testing the new front end (new control arm, tie rods etc) and floor the car and turned sharp. Man it fishtailed big time. I stopped and caught my breath and drove on and noticed a swosh swosh sound coming from the rear. sounds like something is rubbing and at 30 miles an hour it is spaced where I belive it is not the brakes (even though it could be). Any ideas how I can determine what I did. I pulled the back wheel and looked at the drums, brakes and the front shoe is wearing more than the back. Is that normal? Wont do that again.

i doubts its anything you did by fish tailing it, these cars were made to handle things like this. im positive its your brakes, if it was the drive axle then you would have some vibration. find out if the sound is coming from the front or the back. check to see if the front calipers are sticking, but sound like your rear brakes are worn.

You could put the rear up on jackstands, then let the car idle in 1st gear to get the rear wheels turning. Then just watch the movement for any wobble...

Yes, it's normal for the front shoes to wear a little more than the rears. Picture the dyanmic forces on the wheels, body and shoes. While checking your axles, don't forget to check the lug bolts for correct torque too.

Its the back passenger side. Can a wheel bearing go out that fast? Tommorow I will jack it up and check the back wheel. Should I rebuild the brakes in rear? Front are new.

Yes, a wheel bearing can fail rather quickly. Especially if the car had been sitting for a while. While the bearing is packed in grease, it can still form rust during dormant periods.

Well I jacked up the car and spunn the rear wheel and it has a slight wobble. Dosnt make any brake noise when I spin it. Does this seem like I bent the axle or could it be something else, and if I did what all will I need to repair it so I can start buying the parts? Bummer

I would guess that either the axle bent somehow, or the bearing died. Don't know... Are you sure that the wheel is mounted correctly? Stupid question, but had to ask.

We took the wheel off and also spun it and still has a ever so slight wobble. You cant feel it on the highway but hear a sound like the brakes are rubbing, but they dont rub. I am hesitating on thinking for sure that it is the axle but cant seem to think of anything that would do that after fishtailing the car. Is this a hard repair. I have the service manual, but have been dold that the axle on some cars just dont want to come off and can be a real pain?
