Coilovers

Ive got a 79 7. I want to put some coilovers on the rear. i'm thinking of mounting them were the shock went, and just remove the old spring not sure if that will work.. I'm just wondering if anyone knows where i can find coilovers that will fit there and fit up in the shock tower. With the front im going to use a fc front crossmember rack and pinion with the whole steering column and wheel. I just need some help with finding some coilovers for the rear and front just cant find any good sources. would appreciate it alot i really want this car to be top notch.

I don't think you want to rest the weight of the rear on the puny little shock mounts on the axel. I would try to use the stock spring perches. I usually strip everything out of the rear of the car and just cut one coil off of the spring. I understand that you probably want the ability to adjust, so you might have to modify the spring perches to hold the sleeve for the coil overs. I've been happy with mine but I wouldn't cut unless you're gonna put the rear on a diet. Furthermore the top of the shock tower isn't designed to hold the weight of the car just a shock. If you install in that location you will be setting yourself up for disaster. Suspension is a very tricky issue that i feel people take for granite. Just because its low to the ground doesn't mean it will handle any better. If you had the money I would invest in a set of nice aftermarket springs with shocks that offer adjustable valving. That way you can still tune it for ride characteristics (road or track) and maintain an aggressive stance.

Do a search on coilovers, deadcoils, Eibach and Flares. I just did a front coilover mod using the Ground control u weld kit and rear 200# Eibach springs with 2 coils cut. If you go that low you will need to cut your rear fenders(Search for Flares). Mine came out really good and I'm happy with the performance. I did a 120mph run on I-90 last night and it handled like I was doing 60mph. Night and day difference in the handling, no more air getting under the car and pushing the nose up. Having a slight "rake" creates alot more downforce then I realized.
I have a Rack&Pinion out of a 84' VW Rabbit.
