Coffee can under the hood.

Does anyone know the purpose of the coffee can (charcoal canister) under the hood of an '83. I assume it's some kind of filter, maybe for the gas tank? Can I get rid of this, and just splice the tubes together.

It's for the fuel vapors from your gas tank, if you take it out you'll have to vent them somewhere else like straight into the atmosphere which isn't exaclty healthy, hence they charcoal canister.

Dude, unless you go with a aftermarket setup or go Paul Yawing on your carb, just leave it alone. It is the evaperative emission control canister. When its warm out, gas evaperates and pressurizes the gas tank, once a critical pressure is reached, some of the vapor is released and directed to the canister. They can hold about a 1/2quart of gasoline liquid in vapor form if I remember the correct figures. When the engine warms up, a solinoid releases the vapor into the carburator and you "purge" the canister. This is good so you don't loose vapor to the air and can use it also....

Its required by law to have....espeically important in the LA basin were HC's do a lot of harm in the air there causing photo chemical smog.

Whatever setup you have, stock or aftermarket, don't remove it - leave it there. If you need somewhere to run the line from the canister to, run it to the nipple on the center housing on the driver side of the engine near the oil filler (like 82's are setup stock).
