Question Clutch (or lack of one) question...

Ok,

I've never had a clutch go out on me....or master cylinder, or anything, so perhaps someone more experienced with the symptoms can explain it for me.

I've noticed in the last few days, that occasionally, I can't get the car to shift, from say, 2nd, to 3rd, or 3rd to 4th....

Same when I downshift, it's obviously harder to push into gear.

I've also noticed...when I sit at a light, no incline.....and have the clutch all the way in...occasionally, the car will start inching forward, and there is a slight drain on engine rpm when it happens.

There are no leaks under the car.....and the fluid level in the clutch resevoir is still right between MIN and MAX.

Does this mean its time to replace the clutch?

Ok umm...

Hmm.

Well. I only have a manual from an 83 (can't imagine there are many changes to the transmission for an 84) but......

How do you check the transmission oil? This is a manual. Do I have to have the car on a lift? There is no "dipstick" to check the level?

I had exactly the same thing you describe just one day before my clutch slave cylinder failed completely. It obviously wasn't disengaging the clutch completely. It made a huge difference when I got it fixed. Much better clutch feel etc. I thought it was just that I was wearing new boots.. Is your clutch pedel easier to depress than it was??

My mechanic took one look at the slave cylinder, saw a little fluid in/around it and diagnosed the problem. I'm sure if you check for leaks around your master/slave you might get a clue. The slave is down the passenger side on my RHD so I guess it should be the driver side for you.. Right down around the bell housing. You can trace the pipes to find it.

Good luck and I hope it's something more minor!

Um manual transmisions don't have a dip stick to check Tranny fluid. That is only in automatics. As far as checking the tranny fluid you will probably need to get the car on a lift or over a pit. Its just like checking rear end fluid. There is a plug to take out. Just stick your finger in the hole and the fluid should be just below the botom of the hole. The reach should not be too far. As far as filling the fluid you should check with a mechanic.

Any way hop this helps because every one has been so helpful to me

Good luck

Matt

I haven't noticed a difference really in clutch feel....as per it being softer or harder to depress. I drove it earlier and it didnt act up at all. Then I drove it the last time today, and it was doing all the weird whatever's broken symptoms. I guess I'll have to have it checked out as soon as I can.

Well, maybe its old, but also, maybe there is air in the system. This would be apparrent if you have to push it nearly to the floor before the clutch disengages from the gear. Pumping the clutch in a few times will build more pressure, but doesn't fix the underlying problem. There is also a flex hose that hooks to the slave cylinder on the tranny that gets old and leaks in air over time. I'd sugguest replacing the slave cylinder and the flex hose that attaches to it. This stuff will probably run you 50-70bucks total from a local parts store like Bumper to Bumper. From the sound of your knowledge on how to check the tranny gear oil level, I'd highly sugguest you have someone install this for you, since you should use thread sealant and then you'd need to bleed the system to get the air out.

Also check under the dash to be sure the clutch master cylinder isn't leaking.

So from my experience, and from what all these wonderful folks are saying, start like this:

1. Check your tranny fluid by jacking up the car, taking off the top bolt, sticking your finger in and making sure it's about at the bottom of the hole.

2. Bleed the clutch system. It's alot easier and better to do with a friend to help. Follow the Heynes manual procedure (if you don't have a heynes yet, get one, 20$ and worth EVERY penny). Have your friend watch where the connection to the master and slave cylinders meet the lines and the tranny (in the case of the slave) to see if it's leaking any.

3. If symptoms persist, replace both the master, slave and lines.. The whole kit can be had at under 150$ easy, and is a good idea because when one goes, the other is usually RIGHT behind it.

hope it helped

Sell the car to me for $500, and buy a new one with no problems Your car's obviously come down with the rotary plague... it all goes downhill from here... I'll make sure it has a pleasant few remaining days.

Ok,

I got someone coming over tomorrow to help me look things over, and maybe diagnose the problem.

In the event I have to replace clutch cylinders, or even the whole kit.....anyone have some cheap places to suggest to buy the parts?

I have had great success getting parts from the local import car parts supplier. I live in a smallish town so there is only one import parts wholsaler, and he also sells cash and carry to the public. It’s worth a shot. I was able to get both a Master and Slave Cylinder from there. But I don’t know what the scene is like where you are.

Good luck
