basically the metallic colors are clear coat, and the solids are not.

Here is yet another informative thread that I will learn from.

I thought all the early cars were, SA's anyway were single stage and the clear coats came later.

I just picked up a 1979 Y5 coded. it doesn't look like it is clear coated. Curious if the SA's were not clear coated.

I don't know if the standard SA colors were clear coated, but my 79 limited definitely was, because the clear is peeling off in places. The clear can't peel off of single-stage paint.

My 79 was white, Aurora White if memory serves, and it had no clear coat.

Original question is what colors were clearcoated from the factory

A paint code can be mixed in many different paints, so you can have the correct COLOR in single stage or clear coat.
If you are wanting to keep it closer to original and how it might have come from the factory no clear on solid colors

There are very high quality single stage polyurethanes on the market but even single stage paints that have been clearcoated can have that clear lift or fail over time. If its been lifting and failing the underlying color would degrade very quickly if its standard basecoat and not a cleared single stage color . Single stage will hold even with primer showing
