Cool cleaning and repacking rear end on an 85

Im working on my 85 cleaning the 1/4" of crap(grease and dirt) off of the inside of the wheel and all over other parts. I wondered if the grease was leaking from the axel and so i decided to check to see if the gasket was okay or if there was another reason for all the greas to be there. When i separated the axel retaining plate and the brake backing plate i discovered that there was no gasket and chilton dosent mention one. the other thing is that on the break backing plate there is a grove that would normaly face down that looks like it is supposed to be there.

Can anyone tell me where the grease might be comming from?

Outer axle seal. ITs not really a gasket, but a rubber oil sea on the inside of the axle tube. Or it could just be crap that has accumulated over the years.

ya, kinda. ITs like a flat rubber oring, the outside is connected to the axle tube, the inside makes sontact with the axle.

the bearing seal is it. Thats what I was calling an oil seal. That should stop anything from getting out.

The green one that Kragen gave you is the axle seal. The orange on on the bearing is part of the bearing itself... only way to replace that is to swap the entire bearing.

k well the axel seal that kragen gave me didnt fit right i put it on the axel where the picture says here and then tryed to put the axel back in and it left the bearing sticking out the thickness of the seal. So I returned those and whent and ordered one from Napa, picked it up today and it was much differend it looks like the mettal ring will fit over the bearing allowing it to go in the axel all the way. (ill post a pic tonight)
