My choke stopped working. I thought the cable was probably loose, but under the hood it's properly connected. I took the dash apart to get to the ****, and discovered the "box" with it's electrical connections (for the magnet presumably). Since I did not get deep enough to pull the box all the way out I could not figure out whether the cable was properly connected inside the box. Is that box serviceable or do I need to replace it? Am I better off buying a kit to bypass and create my own choke cable?

Are there kits to convert to an "auto" choke? How about relays and/r motor drives to make it real fancy? Any suggestions? I would love to hear from you soon, since it's getting cold here in NYC.

On the back side of the waterpump housing is a sensor with 2 wires. This sensor controls the choke, through the ecu, and if the wires are broken or not plugged in, the choke will not stay out automaticly. This would be the 1st place to look when the choke **** fails to perform as usual.

 

I will try that tomorrow, but my choke **** is not failing to stay out automatically. It's got no resistance and it *does* stay out and doesn't pull the cable and is not doing anything. It literally feels like the **** is not connected to anything.

Then the first check would be to remove the air cleaner lid, pull the choke **** out and see if the choke butterfly is closing or not. If the temp sensor on the back of the waterpump housing is not working, the choke **** will pull in on it's own, all the tme, unless the cable is unhooked, broken or the spring has failed on the carb.

Download the carb manual to check the linkage on the carb for the choke.

 

1. There's no loose wire on the water pump sensor.
2. The choke works when I manually pull the cable, the spring brings it back, but nothing affects the handle. The handle stays in place like it's not attached. When I pull the handle, it stays out until I push it back in, with no resistance at all.

Sounds as if the spring is not pulling the **** back in.

 

the cable is definitely attached at the carb end. When I pull it by hand at the carb, the choke is working. I believe the sensor is working because the **** is tight when I turn the key and loose after the car warms up, but it does not go back in. I really feel like the cable must have come loose inside the black box attached to the ****. Is that part serviceable or do I need to replace the entire part? I saw a guy on ebay selling the cable and box/**** for $40 with shipping (used parts). Is that a good price?
