Choke adjustment?

After my rebuild of the carb, it seems that the choke is not set correctly. I'm not sure if I messed something up, or if I just need to adjust it.

When the car is choked, she is running extremely rich (clouds of smoke, rough idle and missing). When I manually open the shutter a bit, she smooths right out.

If anybody has any ideas I would appreciate some input. Otherwise, if someone can direct me on how to adjust the choke that would be great...

Thanks for your time!

On the end of the choke theres the tab that goes into a slot in the choke heater. It needs to be hooked into the coiled spring or it wont operate properly. Check that. Also check that the choke opens when the engine is revved up. Theres a whole procedure on checking this in the FSM, carb manual, and even the haynes covers most of it. HTH

Thanks Carl. I made sure that the tab was hooked on the spring when I re-rebuilt the carb (missed it the first time). I don't believe that the choke opens when the engine is revved.

Thing is, it worked fine before the rebuild. Now it makes it so rich that I'm afraid I'm going to foul the plugs.

I went through the haynes, but not much there. Other than a cryptic reference to bending the fast idle linkage.

I'll have to take a look at the online FSM tonight when I'm at work (on my lunch break, of course!)... Thanks again for the help! I'm so happy with the progress I've made in the last few weeks; cleaned up the engine bay really nice, installed the efans than auto thermostat, re-wired all my lighting and got the damn switch working again, and today I fixed the sloppy steering with an adjustment to the steering box (like a whole new car!)...

So much progress, but still so much more to go....
