Charging problems

OK I was on my way home from the tech school the other night and as I was driving the lights started going dim. The voltmeter went from 14 all the way down to 4 in about five minutes. I pulled the neg battery terminal and the car shut off so Im thinking the alt. The alt on the car had a lifetime warrenty so I took it back and got a new one. Put the new alt on and started the car let it idle at about 2500. The same thing happened again. I have replaced all the wiring from the battery to the starter and the grounds with 4ga stereo wire with gold connectors, the battery is about four months old, brand new out of the box alt. The haynes manual does not have a wiring diagram for the charging system on an 85. My car does not have the little gold box voltage regulator on the drivers side wheel well, and I am looking for all the info I can get for this system...

fusible links
relays
regulators
wires
other thigs to look at

all of this came up all of a sudden, no warning

any help is appreciated

peace

Is the voltage regulator in this year inside the alternator? It is an 85 12a motor no emissions, 85gs body with an 81 gsl alternator and carbourator. The alternator has two wire hook ups B and L. B being a stud that an eyeloop terminals hooks on to and L being a two terminal blade type connector(nothing hooked up here) anyone got a pic of there alt connection in an 85 non se?

Is the blade terminal on this alt for hot start assist or something similar? I have never hooked it up since I modded the engine, its been running great for about 4 months so I didnt think anything about it. like i said I have checked all the connections that came to mind...

both batt terminals
body ground
engine ground
starter connections
I have checked all of the fuses in the buse block under the dash

Is there a fuse buryed under the dash? a connection I have missed?

I just thought of something that may be important, when I turn on the turn signals either left or right, the volt gauge will show a 4- 6 volt surge every time the lights flash (its always done this so I didnt think anything of it)

ps Thaks for responding jeremy.

Peace
