the only reasoni would be swapping just the center section is because one of my buddys bought it and is using one axle. so if i could get another axle to replace it could i swap out the entire rear end, and then i would have limited slip and disc brakes, what would be involed in that swap?? would the drive shaft still be teh same and all the linkage underneath be the same?? thanks robert

The bare housings will swap into any year or style, all the suspension pickups are the same.
You just have to match axles, housings and pumpkins.Large axles from 84-85 will only work in 84-85 pumpkins and housings. The axle splines dictate the pumpkin type and the wheel bearings dictate the housing type.
You can interchange pinion flanges no problem,so your driveline can mate up.Just be really carful when re-setting the pinion bearing preload.
Technically, you can make big or small axles work with whatever pumpkin you want, its just a matter of swapping the side gears within the differential carrier......but most people will shy away from that much work and they just track down a matching pumpkin/axle/housing set......or they lack the ability to properly reset the carrier backlash and bearing preloads when doing such a swap.
