Catalytic Converter next to the engine (first)
Catalytic Converter next to the engine (first)
The Catalytic converter is plugged up and is affecting the performance of the car. Can i buy a new one? Where? Can i cut out the old catalytic converter? We need to do an emissons test at the end of the month and how wil this affect the results? Can you buy a cheaper non-origanal catalytic converter?
Hey, Mike - welcome to the boards.
It would be helpful for us to know what model your RX-7 is so that we can help you determine if that first cat will be a problem to remove. What you described 'next to the engine' could actually be the exhaust manifold that then leads into several monolithic- and catalytic-converters necessary to keep emissions down.
With a Racing Beat header (no cats) on my 84SE (13b EFI engine), the car blew nearly twice the legal limit for exhaust emissions. Swapping out the header for the stock exhaust brought this back to below legal limits - so you will definitely need to have working cats to pass emissions testing.
Reply back with your car model (G/GS/GSL/GSL-SE), and we can likely point you in the right direction. Pick-A-Part places tend to have these parts are very minimal cost. HTH,

Many thanks LongDuck. This is my first car, I'm 17. I love this car! It's in excellent shape but it looses power on hills etc. the previous owner was told that the first cat. next to the engine needs replacing by the Mazda shop. It is a RX-7CP 1985. We looked at the engine head and it read 12A. The car model number is Fb331 and the engine family read FTK1.1V4GFB8. The vin number is JM1FB3314F0893258. All we have is the owners manual at present.
Thanks for the help, it is much appreciated.

Cats
You need to take down the exhaust system and make sure it has not plugged up the main or rear cat as we call it. The front ones do some of the job but the main cat is the factor behind passing. If you just need the front ones i probably have used ones around that i will sell cheap.
You can upgrade to this an actually improve your power by replacing the old style cat.
