Carter Fuel Pump question/issue

So I just bought this new Carter fuel pump (CRT-P4594) and I got it all mounted as per Kentetsu's thread. Now I'm just having a small issue, when I turn the key to crank the motor the pump runs and I can hear it but it looks like it's not pumping very hard. I can see it pumping fuel into the fuel filter but it's not continuing to the front of the car. I took off the fuel line at the carb to test it and nothing comes out when the engine is cranked. So my 2 questions are 1. Is the pump supposed to run even when the key is turned forward and not cranking the engine, and 2. Did I somehow hook it up wrong? I went over everything and it seems fine. The wires are even hooked up correctly. Here is a photo of the setup. The yellow line is the IN and the blue is the OUT. Or at least from what I think it should be. I drew the yellow line outside the photo to show the continuation of the hose.

That will make a difference? I remember it being the same way on my stock pump with no issues. No harm in trying I suppose! Thanks!

Is the filter installed in the right orientation for it to flow, maybe the in is in the out direction worth a shot and my pump runs constant even with the key in the start position (exact same one) so I wound guess so.

Do you have enough power going to the pump? Try hard wiring it to the battery and
see if it does better. Could be old wiring messing with it. I have mine setup with a
relay and getting power directly from the battery. Made a big difference. Mine is a
4070m slightly different pump.

im trying to understand your routing? i believe when i installed mine i skipped the hardline that causes it to double back on itself, the yellow line in your pic.

i think i just ran fuel line from the outlet in the tank to the inlet of the pump, with the filter just there in the middle

the 79-83's should run the fuel pump with the key on, the 84-85's have a relay, and won't run the pump unless the engine is turning also.

That is the correct filter. Turning it upside down (I hope) was a joke.

There are some extra lines in that area that can be bypassed/eliminated. As suggested, make sure your outlet is hooked up to the line that runs to the carb (not into the tangled mess with rollover shutoff, etc.).

For the filter, which even when brand new is just barely adequate for a good running 7, here's what I did:

I eliminated the rollover shutoff. The top right hardline going into the 'yellow' hose, is that coming from the tank? Because I have it so it comes from the tank, to the filter, into the pump, out the other side to the 'blue' hose into the hardline towards the front. I assume that is correct.

why? i have one like that and its installed upside down to give more of a reserve. so the tank fills instead of the pump sipping fuel off the top. is there a neck that goes down in the middle of the filter element to draw from the bottom?
