Carburetor issues.

Ok, i've got a '78 12a engine which won't tick over properly, when it ticks over it just pours fuel down the carb and after a minute just dies because its choked up, if i rev it theres a nice fine mist going into the pots but as soon as the revs die off the petrol starts pouring down the carb again, so far i've stripped and rebuilt the carb, changed the fuel filter, checked the pump flow and checked the return pipe.
Sterling has been trying to help me but now we are both stumped, whatever we try it remains the same.
If ANYONE can think what the hell it might be then please help me out.
Thanks.
I'm thinking maybe the only solution is to get a new carb from Sterling.

A new carb from Sterling would certainly do the trick.

Are you using a stock fuel pump? Any other type of pump will put out more pressure than the carb can handle.

It almost sounds like your floats are hanging up. Can you look into the sight glass windows and see if the fuel level is at the correct height (halfway)? Sometimes, when you are reassembling the carb, the floats won't hang correctly and will not stop the flow of fuel into the bowls. Sterling probably covered all of this with you, but thought I'd ask.

Good luck!

Did you plug the vent bowl solenoid wire back in?

If you rebuild a carb. you have to set the floaters up to meet factory specification. If you don't it will open too much and the car will flood.

Yes the solenoid is ok and the floats are set, the fuel level sits at half way in both site glass windows.

Does your carb have vacuum-operated power valves set in the bottom of the float bowls? If those are stuck open (or if the actuators are not getting vacuum & are holding them open) that will result in a serious flood condition under low RPMs.
