Carb-Attack

hey, first off just wanted to say i've been a long time reader and now have my own question.

Got the old mans rx7 out of storage (been sitting for over 5 years) and after all the usual stuff got it to run ok, the problem is weather the engine is cold or hot the tach will dance around 400 - 500 rpms after I romp on the gas (when its warm of course) and open the scendaries and then come to a stop, 99% of the time the car will backfire a couple times and idle rough to a stall unless i play with the gas pedal, when this happens i'll turn the car off and take off the air filter cover and look in to the carb to see a good supply of unused gas sitting there.

So is the car in need of a carb rebuild (we didn't empty out the gas tank prior to storage). Or does it sound more like a vacume issue, Or is the problem completly diffirent

thanks, any help is GREATLY apperciated
-chris

I would try using seafoam first, you can buy it at your local napa dealer for about 10$. Pour some down the carb, and the rest into the gas tank. This usually helps with rough idles, and clean the carb out and the lines. Not sure if you've changed your fuel filter too that would be a wise idea. Did you also empty the old gas and poured fresh gas in the tank?

I had a similar problem. It would start and run all right for a while, and seemed to run fine at WOT, but it would idle very poorly and backfire a lot. It turned out to be caused by bad fuel. We ended up rebuilding the carb, but that may be a bit drastic in your case. Have you checked out the ignition? dizzy cap & rotor all right, good plugs? Funny tach issues are often linked to the ignition, the tach reads off the trailing ignitor.
