*disregard everything said here in relation to above post!*

As an SE fanatic, I can say that your EFI setup can be improved on, but not by moving to a carb!

I'll get flames for saying this, but there's a reason why every new car out there has EFI as it's fuel supply system and not a carbeurator. Carbs are difficult to tune for different elevations and weather conditions, are not as fuel efficient as EFI, and are generally more problematic than a solid EFI setup.

The SE's RE-EGI intake system uses a 'Dynamic Chamber' to utilize the intake air mass that's moving into the engine, to build additional intake pressure for the opening port - this has a natural 'supercharging' effect, since this excess pressure helps to pack air/fuel into the rotor path before the port closes. Also, the SE's have '6'-port induction, which was the Variable-Valve-Timing of it's day (and for the rotary). This opens 2 additional air ports under exhaust backpressure (high load, high rpm >3800) which gives the engine more breathing room and accounts for it's increases in BOTH low-rpm torque (134lb/ft, stock) and peak horsepower at 135hp, stock. All of this with about 17/20 for city/highway mileage.

When you start to look at total engine performance, one of the reasons the SE's get this performance edge is the increased displacement, but the rest is the ingenuity that the Mazda engineers built into the EFI system to keep it competitive with Porche, BMW, and others.

Is there any doubt that the 2nd Gen cars all have both '6'-port induction and EFI systems??? The SE was before it's time...

But, hey, I'm biased. Slap a Holley on there - you'll be back...
