Car stuck in gear after replacing shifter.

My friend installed a short throw shifter in his car and now the car is stuck in gear and wont go into nuetral. He put the stock shifter back in and still it won't come out of gear. Now what can be causing this? Anybody ever had this problem?

Dumb question, but did he have the car in nuetral when the shifter was installed?
If the trans was in gear, and he missed the shift rail, then that would be the problem.....

See if maybe a piece of the old bushings or spacer fell and is wedged.

Well it feels like you can shift through the gears and everything, but when you think you have it in neutral, it's not. We tried putting it in gears to see if that would be neutral but it's not. I am kind of dumbfounded on this one. I haven't seen this happen before.

I'm with both doc and rogue on this one. Remove the shifter, center the shifter cup in neutral and re-install. If the problem persists, clean out the resivouir the shifter sits in. There is an access plate on the side. It's difficult to remove with the exhaust and heat shields in place. Sometimes if you overtighten the plate that holds the shifter in place, it can cause the shifter to bind.
