Car isn't pulling up top... fuel pump?

Done the real minor mods, got rid of emissions, ratnest, smog pump etc. Removed all the cats and rebuilt the carb. Other than that I have a stock 85 gs with about 70k orig miles on it.

Car pulls pretty good from 3k to about 6ish, then you just feel the power flatline. I'm leaning twords the 20 year old factory original fuel pump... Either way replaceing it can't hurt anything.

What would you all reccomend to repalce this? Just a new factory replacement?
(whatever dicount auto has.)

Or would U suggest something a little larger? If so what? Also what should my fuel pressure be set at? Do I need a regulator? And is hot wiring the fuel pump with some decent gauge wire and a 30 amp relay reccomended like it is for most fuel injected cars?

This is my first carb'd car. Any and all help is appreciated.

Have you replaced your fuel filter yet? When you rebuilt the carb, did you remove the jets and make sure that they are clear of debris?

Check your timing if you have done all of the above.

If you replace your fuel pump, check with www.summitracing.com for a Carter fuel pump and a Holley FPR (1-4 psi). Your pressure should be set at 2.5 - 3 psi. You won't need to change any of the wiring, your model is already using a relay.

Here's the details of my order from last week, when I purchased what I just recommended:

Part # Item Box Status Price Qty Price

CRT-P4594 FUELPMP ELEC 7PSI STREET/STRIP A Shipped on 04/04/06 $59.95 1 $59.95

HLY-12-804 FUEL PRESS REG 1-4 PSI A Shipped on 04/04/06 $24.88 1 $24.88

Filter jets and timing are all good. Thanks for the PN's...

As Kentsesu suggested - start with filter!

I replaced my filter, painted the car, and had starvation issues. Replaced the fuel pump only to find that an amazing amount of paint had gotten into the tank and plugged the filter!

I'll check that again, although it was changed last month and I haven't painted anything.

Also discount auto sells the factory replacement pump for $93. Wouldn't this be easier than trying to install a carter pump and regulator? Or is the stock pump not enough to keep up with the motor after exhaust and intake mods?

Also do you hae a pic of what your carter pump looks like? I have an old carter street/strip pump thats never been used. Looks like so...

Thanks!
