Angry cant get smooth idle and lack of power

I recently purchased my first rotary powered vehicle. a 1985 gs. i bought it from a old lady who had it sitting for about 4 years. So i figured it would need some work. It ran alittle rough when i picked it up but ok then nothing. So i rebuilt the carb and replaced the fuel filter. when changing the filter found the fuel to be orange in color. Took the tank down and there was a quarter inch of sludge in bottom. Had it cleaned and fired right up. Now i cant get it to idle properly. Plus when i floor it in neutrul, i only go up to about 6000rpms and it seems to get worse as it gets hotter. It also surges really bad when hot. Under a load i can only get up 3000rpms. I'm stumped. I've also replaced most of the vacuum lines and get no change. I'm really need help.
Thanx in advance. JIM

Try swapping the leading and trailing igniters. They are located on the distributor. If leading is bad and you swap to trailing the tach will not work anymore.

No...There are two plugs towards the front of the car on the distributor. Those are the ignitors. They are little black boxes about 2" square. Im assuming that you just swap the plugs on those and see if the car will run. If it runs, then the trailing igniter is good, and if the tachometer still works, the leading is good as well. If the car doesnt run, the trailing is bad, and if it runs but no tachometer, then the leading ignitor is bad. Isint that right guys?

http://pittdp.homestead.com/underhood.html ,my 85 had sat up for a few years also, biggest problem i had was fuel delivery, now it runs great, if u have already cleaned the gas tank and ran the car awhile do a check of the fuel filter, does it have sand looking rust in it, i eventualy got a non rusted tank at bone yard for $25, i had rust in the float bowls, in the fuel rail screens going on top of carb and was replacing the fuel filter at least every 150-200 miles of driving,,,did u replace the accelerator pump diaphram on the carb,,also on the fule return line there is a one way metal check valve, pull it off and clean it, also check for dry rotted vaccume lines and other clogged check valves, if u have a bone yard that has a 7 in it, go get some parts off carb ,solinoids, acv valve, etc. good luck with your 7, were here to help.......

check your cat

I just had the same problem on mine. My cat had failed. Just on bolt the flange and peak down with a flaslight, if it'd bad you will see. I used a crobar to smash the insides up and dumped them out, my car runs like a bat out of hell now.

I had no power over 3 or 4 grand, and my idle was rough. Once over 100k miles they tend to fail.
