I bought a cheapo adapter that lets you plus into a .5mm stereo jack and play through the cassette input. This works GREAT except for the part where the radio keeps switching between program mode (left and righ arrow). APC switch seems to function, light goes on and off accordingly but regardless of it's position, it keeps switching back and forth!

help pleae!

They're probably all waiting for you to explain what kind of stereo you're using, and what the "APC" on that stereo is / does.

Is ACP something on the stock Clarion? I only ever messed with a stock one for a few minutes but I seem to recall it's either part of a multiplex stereo setting from the 80s, or part of a diversity antenna (dual antenna). Or lastly I'm thinking it might be like a dolby tape hiss/noise reduction setting.

My guess is that it has to do with the auto reverse, which many of the cassette adapters can drive insane by providing too much resistance on the spindles.

There were three technologies used over the years for detecting auto-reverse for casette decks. The oldest one worked based on the spindle drive meeting too much resistance, indicating the end of the tape.

The other two used tones encoded on tape, and a metallic strip of tape that was tested conductively, much like 8-tracks used for the track-advance mechanism.

But that's just a guess. I've never seen the stock Clarion tape player in operation.

You've got it.

Now, weather or not I have the feature on, my player keeps going between forward and reverse on it's own accord. When it switches to reverse, I stop getting sound from my phone. As much as I do love the sound of my rotary, I wouldn't mind some music now and then!

You're losing the sound because the tape head also moves vertically when the tape direction is reversed, and this takes the heads out of alignment with the pickups in the adapter.

Only way I can see to fix this is to either a) figure out which type of reverse-sensing mechanism the Clarion used, determine why the adapter is triggering it, and alter the adapter to stop it from doing that, or b) find an adapter that doesn't trigger it.
