Question can anyone help a 79' guy out here.. anyone?

hey guy.. i just got a 79' a few days ago, the first day or two the car started out fine and ran fine.. but it seems today it just doesn't want to start anymore.. well it cranks and all, but its just not starting.. im guessing i should get a new alternator/replacement.. when i got the car, it needa a jump so we could drive it home. and i just replace the battary and now it won't start.. but i was wondering if you guys know anything to this type of problem or have come across something like this.??? anything is good to know.. any suggestions.? plus for some weird reason as i've posted already. my fuse just keeps on blowing on me.. its fuse number one for hazard.. weird..

well the fuse blowing means its obviously not working so mybe you have a short in the wiring.

now do you mean the batery keeps going dead or is it not starting for you?

well the fuse blowing means its obviously not working so mybe you have a short in the wiring. this will cause the batery to drain. i have had it happen to me before.

i would check the plugs to make sure that they are all firing if not then check the coils. if they are all firing then maybe it is a fuel related problem. check the fuel filter and all the lines and stuff. i had a problem with mine getting to much fuel so i rebuilt my carb and had the floats set right. i had a 79 and i just took the engine out of it and put it in my 83 gsl. good luck

Well with your fuse blowing and having the symptoms that you are, most likely you have a short somewhere. Check to see if you have the proper size fuse in place, a larger fuse could be allowing too much juice through the wire.

Another way to check for the short would be to remove the blown fuse, rig up a 12V test light using a small automotive bulb, and check to see if you have light when you hook your test light up to the fuse prongs. If you do, then you have a short, if not then its something else.

If you do have light then start pulling fuses one by one, when the light goes out, your short should be down line of the fuse that turned the light out.

It does sound like what happened to me personally. Its the alt. Just get a replacement anyway because its been sitting, and it'll only do you good. While your at it, changer the hoses, water pump and thermostat. You'll thank yourself when your whole engine compartment isnt rolling out steam when your under the hood...
