Came across an interesting SE today...

I was out in my Accord at the local supermarket, and parked near a bright red GSL-SE.

Of course, I gave it a walk around to check it out as I was going in.

Something interesting....

I noticed it has a back seat!?!!?

I checked the guages to see if they were in Kilometers, since from what I gather, they never came that way in the US....but, it was all MPH.

It was a very clean SE, red, with mint looking red leather seats. Looked all stock too, nothing added or missing.

Can you put the rear seats in an FB, or do they only come factory, with a different setup than the standard 2 seater FBs? Or is it more likely that this was an out of country car that was brought here?

It was a Right hand drive, with Minnesota plates.

Rear seats are difficult to put into North American spec 1st gens, since they contain additional rear body bracing to meet tougher rear-impact standards.

Odds are someone removed this bracing and installed the seats early enough in the life of the car that the cost of doing so made sense.

The cars after 1980 did not have these braces in them from the factory. I have 2 85's and an 84 and 82 parts car and none of them have the braces. My friends 79 and 80 both have the braces. The Japan spec rear seat and moulding changes will fit right in a US later car.

Well if it was a right hand drive, and had rear seats my guess would be that the car is probably a j-spec import.

The guy could have swapped in a different spedometer guage. I mean come on, what other country that has RHD in the world still has the standard measurement system?

EDIT: Oh wait I just relized that were talking about a SE here. Well the SE's only came out in america right? So My guess is its a j-spec and someone stuck a GSL-SE badge, and possibly swapped in some other SE components like suspension.

It could also be a 12a turbo with a mph speedometer, and a GSL-SE badge on it. I would have kept the GT badge on it though.

The air coming in from those Z3 fenders on your Honda is starting to mess with your head.

So, is it possible to install the seats into an FB like mine, with the storage bins?

Is it bolt in type modification, provided you can ever find the seats?

It would be nice to be able take my FB out with my girlfriend and daughter, instead of always having to take the Honda when all 3 of us go out.

well I believe it is just a bolt in mod. But those back seats are so small no one is ever going to want to sit back there.

Pacific Kits used to make back seat kits for our cars. They were expensive, something like $500!!!

when I took mine out of the last 1st gen I owned it didnt look too complicated to install them into another 1st gen.

you would have to fad up some bolt holes for the seat belts though.

There's been an fb rear seat for sale for some time, right on this here forum! You would have to fab up the seat belt mounts, apparently...

Have you tried a search?

and if indeed it was RHD and looked like an -SE, with out the badge. it would have been a j-spec series 3. but everyone already knew that.

When I fisrt got my car, I was glad that it had no back seats. I hate having to haul my friends everywhere, why can't they freaking drive their own car?, etc.

Besides, as one of my friends mentioned to me once....

My car has a lot of "head"room!

The rear seats look just big enough to fit in my daughter's car seat. She's only 1, so its not like we need a ton of room for her. It would just make it a little more convenient for me, and a little more fun, to be able to take the Rx-7 out instead of the Honda, everytime we need room for her.

I doubt a child seat would fit back there.... my seat is pushed all the way back on the rails, and most child seats (especially if they are too young to face forward) protrude beyond the edge of the seat. They usually protrude too high. Besides, you can't (shouldn't) drive a 7 like its supposed to be with a young child in the back anyway.

Hahah, a helmet ;-)

The back seat just bolts in. My friend (Metalic_Rock on the boards) had a back seat in his, and gave it to his friend to install so that it would lower his insurance. Pretty good deal i thought!

(Thats the only reason he put it in, not to seat ppl hehe)

Just FYI, although it doesn't apply to this car (MPH) Canadian spec cars (KPH) have the bracing post-1980 as impact standards were lowered to 2.5MPH in the US only and Canadian regulations remained at the higher levels.
