Hey all,, I just went through the cal. smog run-around.
California targets such cars as the RX7's, and sends you
to a test only station.I failed, and by law the smog tech
can't tell what you need to do to pass. So,you have to go to another place and spend more money to have them tell you what you need to do. It's a scam i tell you !! My cars engine, i left stock just because of cal. smog. I did buy and install a bonez hi-flow cat. and let me tell you. they pass cal. smog. so bonez are ok. In my case i had to many hydro's (un-burnt gas) on the nikki's
when this happens,,it's the float ! and needs to be tweaked so it shuts off completly. Thats it !! and when thats done and works right your gas milage gets way better. What i don't understand is how my timing got 170' out. car ran real good 170' out, poor milage and i didn't change the timing at all, ever !! wierd.. I'm an 82
with over 170.000 miles on the OEM clock.and the car still huals ***.for all the smog crap still on there.If your in california and your reg.says 'test only' go to a gross smog station instead of test only. at a gross /repair station they will tell you whats up if you don't pass first time. So remember this thread.

 

my 83 passed with fling colors. the key is the acv and airpump

Yeah, CA smog laws suck! I was so suprised I passed the test only place the first time (this year).

what is an acv?

 

air control valve; it works with the air pump to push air in the intake manifold and make your car more tree hugger happy

 

My GSL-SE didn't pass easy.... but the stuff that was replaced was ACV and a HIGH FLOW CAT... you should pass... and check the timing... make sure its perfect... if its retarded... it makes the HC read high...
