Question California Carb. Question

I Have an 82 California model that I can not get to start. I rebuilt the original carb 3 times, and though i did get it to turn over a couple times, eventualy the bowls fill up and it pours gas.

If anyone knows ether something I can try to get it to run, or worst case, a recomondation for a replacement.

Lots of good information in this post:

Search the 1st generation forum under the terms "Nikki flooding" and you will get many more posts with information you can use.

Sounds like sticking needle valves.

When you rebuilt it did you:

- Replace the needles and seats?
- Touch the float levels at all?
- Change the floats?

What has changed

Did it run before you did the carb?
Is there a chance that the prior owner replaced the fuel pump with a "universal" pump? If so, is it a low pressure version, or is there a low pressure regulator installed?

I did replace the jets, needle and seats. I also adjusted the float level, which was off by quite a bit. I did not change the floats, they were is great shape.

I have not got to the fuel pump, but as far as i can tell the gas tank has not been removed before, so it should be stock.

When I bought the car it was not running, but you could get it to fire and sputter for a few seconds. From what I was told the problem, whatever it is, caused a slow decay in the cars performence.

I also replaced the Air Vent solinoid.

I have not had a chance to look at the thread yet, had to do my breaks. Thanx a lot for the help.

The fuel pump on this car is not inside the tank

fuel pressure

If the fuel pressure is to high it will cause flooding.
The normal pressure per the 1979 shop manual for a RX7 is 3.7 to 4.7 psi.
If the pump has been replaced with one that puts out more you will have issues.
A test for fuel pressure should tell you if the problem is the pump or the carb. It may be possible to reset the float level to compensate for a small amount of extra pressure. If the pump is delivering 6-8 psi you may be able to correct it by installing a fuel pressure regulator. You need a low pressure unit that has a range of around 2-4 psi.
