Cali Buddies Maybe Wanna Do Me A Favor? Also Is This A Good Deal?

Ok, I found a guy in Cali. that has a 1985 something or other RX-7, but he is turning it into a race/autocross car or something, and he works at some kind of auto race track/shop, so hes pulling the entire old engine from the 7, and selling it to me "long block" for $350, or $600 complete so he can put in a full built custom job. Sound like a good deal to you guys? I will most likely buy it long block cause I only have $300 now, but I dont really need all the extra crap cause all the stuff that came off my engine should be good. Anyway, just wanted to share cause im excited now .

~T.J.

PS - He has offered numerous times in our communications to let me hear it run to make sure its up to par. Well, I live in WA so I will be unable to hear it run...Should I be concerned about this? Anyone in cali (Kentfield??) that might wanna go check this out for me?

So this is a stock running 12a for $350? If so sounds good to me. I would not pay $250 more for the accessories, especially if yours are good. See if you can get compression numbers.

I would go for it. What kind of mileage does it have? Might want to check that first, but for the price - BUY IT!

Ok, thanks anyway Cali. guys, I decided on somthing local. I went to a guy that has a 79 running pretty strong, but hes been rallying it around his yard, so its COVERED in mud. The interior is a little rough, but its black. Maybe I can use some parts off of it because I want black interior in my 83. The engine fires right up, even with no choke (wont idle well though). Shes loud with nothing past the header, but nothing my exhaust for my 83 wont cure . Im going to pick it up tomorrow and see what I can do with it once I get it home. Ill let you all know. If I cant use anything or decide not to, I know where you can get a 79 REAL CHEAP .

In theroy, if I drop this engine in my car, what should I be prepared to change? Refresher: 1979 RX-7 GS? donor car, 1983 RX-7 GSL receiving car. I know the ignition will be changed to electronic (anyone know a website I can read?), the oil cooler (website?), and the "emissions" are different...What does the "emissions" difference mean (website)? Can I just strip the 79 engine down to basically nothing and drop in all my stuff? It will at least bolt up to the 83 tranny and motor mounts, right?

yep, easiest way will be to strip the motor down and bolt your stuff on. (intake, dizzy, accesories)

Also use the 79 radiator, oil cooler, fan shroud, heater hoses, oil cooler lines, oil filter mount, ect, to get the oil/air cooler. (unbolt 83 radiator, bolt in 79 oil cooler, bolt in 79 rad; unbolt 83 METAL heater hose, bolt in 79.

if the 79 has a header, use it.

use the 83 dizzy and harness.(pull out 79, stab in 83)

ask here if you get stuck, GOOD LUCK
