budget alternatives to complet RB exaust system?
i've heard of people just buying an RB header, and then buying cats and mufflers from other sources and having a pipe custom bent. is this cheaper? is the RB exaust really THE only way to go?
ideas?

The cheapest way to do it would be to duct tape aluminum pepsi cans together and route that back to the muffler.
Ok, I'm an ***.
I plan on sticking with the same parts, but yeah, lots of people mix and match parts. Its all better than the stock system, and if you can get it cheaper than the racing beat steup by mixing them, then its up to you to decide to spend more money, or less money. On my 84 GS when I was in College working at KFC, I couldn't afford a racing beat setup. I went to a local speed shop and the guy cut off that old stock crap and put one 1 high flow cat, bent a pipe, and put a turbo muffler on it. No header, but hey, it worked and it was more free flowing.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: Cheap exhaust parts cost more (you'll be replacing them every year or so, whereas the RB system is built to last)

Alright, Racing Beat's website is down, so I can't check it out. What makes their stuff so good? If it's made of unobtanium, I would think another's exhaust component made of unobtanium would last just as long. Does no one else use the same medium for their exhaust components?

i have a racing beat header, generic high flow cat, 2.25" custom bent pipe to a ractive, 3" dual tip muffler. ive had it since november, and i have no complaints except for noise. i really wish i would of spent the extra money to get a racing beat muffler. the pre-silencers and such.. blah.. it was too much money

That's just it - the other guys either (a) tend to make something out of lesser components for a higher profit margin per unit or (b) haven't been doing it since 1978 as RB has, but slapped something together after F&F and SCCA made more people want RX-7s

the RB system I have is just great, and worth the price. Even if I pay twice as much as you guys, due to shipping and taxes... No cheap **** under my car....
If you go the cheaper route you'll be unhappy with the result and go RB in the end anyway, so all you'll do is spend the price of the cheaper parts extra...

it's rugged-heavy, true, but still lighter than stock. Remember, exhaust heats and cools to drastic extremes and thinner metal, while lighter, distorts and breaks down sooner

i had a shop fab a pipe from my headers over the axel and into my SS muffler... great system in my opinion, if your not gonna go with RB just make sure you do it properly, dont put no crap turbo muffler on it cuz it will be gone fast... make sure its not a crimped muffler, otherwise it could blow upp...

I've looked at the Bonez High-flow system for my SE, but that's still $500 for a high-flow cat and muffler - no header. I'm thinkin' I'd just as soon go the extra $180 for the complete RB setup.
Here's the deal, kiddo - if you have to replace your exhaust system because it's falling apart and you can't afford the quality stuff you really want, then go with the cheapest thing you can get away with that will last until you can afford something like the Bonez or RB system. And that just might be pepsi canz
If you dont't have to to replace your exhaust system and are just looking to put a performance system on but can't afford the quality stuff you really want - then don't touch it, save your pennies, wait until you can afford what you want. You'll be better off in the long run.
Edit - Damn I wish they'd put a spel chekker on here...
