broken tackometer
It is most likely your trailing ignitor. The tachometer is getting its signal off of the trailing side of the ignition and if the trailing ignitor fails your tach will be dead.
The trailing ignitor is the one on the rear of the distributor (not the one facing the radiator). if there is a junkyard near to you just go and grab one and swap it out. Note: you'll probably have to loosen the dist. and turn it clockwise to change the trailing ignitor for lack of space, now messing with the dist. means you also will need to set the timing when you are done, which in turn means you need a timing light. Now if you have a timing light in the first place you can do a preliminary check by just checking for spark on T1.

You don't have to mess with the distributor [and timing] to get to the trailing igniter. Just go to your local hardware store and buy a 90 degree bent flathead screwdriver. Or, if you're feeling creative, it can be removed with a clip from a pen and the fuse from your rear wiper. On the side of the road. Ask me how I know
