Brand new slave cylinder bad?

How common would it be for a brand new clutch slave cyliner to be bad and have to be replaced? That's what my mechanic has come up with to explain continuation of a clutch problem after putting in a new slave and assuring me that the master shows absolutely no signs of a leak.

After riding around for a while( in 83 GS) with a can of DOT3 always handy------always pumped clutch at stop lights to maintain pedal pressure but sometimes had to quickly get out, open hood, pour in some fluid, pump clutch and take off---- I had the slave cylinder replaced. Within a couple of days, it was doing the same thing. I brought it back, but he couldn't detect any leak(s)--- said he kept clutch depressed for 30min with engine on, but no leak was visible. He said that it probably just needed to be seated properly. I took it away and had the same problem---- clutch pedal to the floor---- within a day. Unless it's my imagination, the problem seems to begin while accelerting through a corner with clutch pedal not fully depressed------ not my usual practice but carpet keeps sliding forward, etc. When I told mechanic about that, it didn't seem to mean anything to him---- just my 2 cents. This last time, I had to pump clutch for about 15 minutes after filling resevoir in order to be able to engage gears.

So my mechanic says that the new slave cylinder must be bad and to bring it bak in for replacement. This sounds lame to me. Anybody else have a new cylinder be bad from the start.? After reading some previous threads, I'll be sure to request checking hoses. Aside from that, any other ideas that might be causing this problem.
Thanks for any input.

sounds like a master cyl to me my old cavalier did the same thing first I replaced the slave , then the hose finally the master and magically fixed the prob

just remember to be sure that the system is properly bled... one tiny little air bubble can compress a lot more than brake fluid ... and also make sure the bleed valve is completely closed

hope it helps

Thanks---- addendum

Thanks. Wile it's in this time, I might just ask him to go ahead and repalce master as well.

Also, I meant to say in original message, that the problem seems to start while cornering with clutch only partially engaged. The way I originally stated it din't come out quite right.
