Thumbs down Brake Pad Questions...

Alright guys, my pads sqeak!!!!

like bad!!!!

My rotors are brand new, been turned twice and are visibly ok.

The pads are Raybestos (crappy, i know) and are as old as the rotors.

What can i do to stop the squeak!!??

I've tried that Squeak Stop spray ****, it don't work.

What pads have you had good experiences with and where did you get them?

thanks
Josh

Thumbs up Uhh...

uhh...i guess so.
hehe.
yeah, that's the little metal plate that has clips that hold it to the pad?
my mechanic suggested that it's the pad, the pad is a hard pad so that wear is reduced, but conversely it increases squeakage.

And it only squeaks after they are warm and i've been driving for awhile.

but, it's been getting worse. like, now it takes less time for them to start squeaking.

damn

There's also a compound that is supposed to be smeared liberally on the back of the pads that absorbs some of the resonances that creates the sqeek you hear...

Thumbs up the pad

I'll try that grease thing on the back of the pad...
but is a better pad, like Ferodo or Hawk gonna help the situation?
thanks

Hey Josh, from my experience in autocrossing, all of the pads make noise except the expensive factory Mazda pads! Much better performance with Ferodo or Hawk but not so friendly on the rotors. The Mazda pads are the friendliest and quitest.

My 2 cents!

uh huh huh huh, you said squeakage.

brakes are overrated, just take'em off. i would do the grease thing between the shim and pad and see if that helps. otherwise get a better sound system.

Thumbs up straight up

hehehe, straight up with the sound system.

it was funny, when i used to run around with the headers un-capped, i'd just turn my radio off, i couldn't hear it anyway!!!

Yeah, all they do is slow you down. And talk about heavy! Ditch 'em and lower your rotational inertia.

To help stop the squeal, get 80 grit sandpaper and a palm sander and go over the disc. Discs are supposed to be surfaced as well as turned, but few people really surface them. It will help a lot.

I had the same problem right when I first bought the car. My rotors had to be resurfaced since there were rust pits, and that rust that kept freeing up made the squeaking noise. Also, if there isn't enough left in your rotor, the fact that it is too thin alone could get you vibration and squeaking. You said they have been turned twice, maybe they need to get cut? Also, check your rear brakes (if they are drum) a buildup of brake dust in the drum makes a really annoying squeal until you clean it out. Just my $0.02.

when rotors are turned they sre cut from the inside out, this leaves a spiral type grove around the rotor, picture a record player, this forces the pads to move to the outside of the rotor untill they can move no more, then they jump back toward the center, causing vibration and noise. Taking a circular friction material on a power tool, like a circular sander, will alleviate this problem to a degree.

That all said even the experts (I was one of them for a while) cannot get some cars to quit squealing, even trying all the tricks. Sometimes it takes putting on the factory pads.
