Brake Booster. Is this bit supposed to pop off?

Removed my brake booster to paint it. Picked it up by the brass colored metal rod in the front center (circled red in pic below) which pulled completely out of the booster. It slides back in with a reassuringly firm feel…. But do I need to do more than slide it back in? Its brakes, so don’t want to find out the hard way.

I will reinstall the booster as it’s a quick job, and if I have the symptom described in the post I know what do do.

Done. Went back in with no troubles. Test drive good. I feel at least an additional 10 horsepower. Once I have a replacement hose, maybe 15?
