bouncing voltmeter

I noticed over the last couple weeks that when I apply the turn signal that my volt meter jumps between 14.1 and 12.? volts for each "flash".

I guess the 85 rx7 also has a low voltage buzzer? When I am in reverse (reverse lights on) and I hit the breaks - a buzzer goes off in the dash (somewhere) - I notice the voltage a little low (but appears to be above 12v). The buzzer sometimes goes off with the turn signal is making the voltage bouncing. This is much more an issue when I have the headlights on .

I wonder if it is the turn signal flasher unit (but why do I get the issue w/ the revers ldash buzzing).

(the buzzing is normally "fixed" by turning up the radio - but the bouncing voltmeter is a real eye catcher/distraction)

I have removed and cleaned my battery posts (there was no corrosion, but I removed and wirebrushed both the terminal and inside of the connector just to prevent this as being an issue) as well as the primary grounding to the frame and body.

I had this problem prior to replacing the battery (about a week ago). The battery was about 6 years old and developed a crack in one of the side terminal posts and was leaking.

Have read thru these two posts - which never came to an answer: https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...er+turn+signal
https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...er+turn+signal
But I did not see anything relating to a low voltage buzzer going off....

Dont know anything about a low voltage buzzer... But every car that I have had has done that. Let me link you to something...

The electrical system is fairly week in our cars. With the combination of old components, this can make matters worse and cause many problems. However, there are many things you can do to completely eliminate these issues.

Before you start I recommend poking around with a volt meter on your various components such as your alternator, starter, and battery. This can give you an idea on what individual components could be failing. After cleaning or replacing a component, test with the meter again.

1. Clean all connections, factory grounds and add dielectric grease to connections.

2. Add grounding wires from the neg battery terminal to the fire wall and to the engine block. This will ensure everything is getting a good ground throughout the system. The better the ground the higher the voltage.

3. Upgrade fuse block to FC style. Not only are the fuses better quality, easier to find and more resistant to corrosion; the block is more a heavier unit and in many cases will improve your voltage output.

4. Alternator upgrade. This can be done relatively easy.

Kentensu (Dont know how to spell his name right) did a thread on the holly FPR and Carter FP, he posted how to stop the voltometer from doing that about halfway through the thread...

How old is your battery? Regardless I'd have it's condition checked too. Any problems starting the car?

Hmmmm... mine is doing the oposite. It keeps putting out over 14V, so I have to keep the A/C turned on and the fan motor running to keep her down between 12-13 V. Normal is supposed to be between 13.5 and 14.2 V, but mine was edging up to 15V. I think the voltage regulator on these alternators are not working as well as they could be. I am paranoid about it now because my last alternator went bad (voltage reg quit altogether) and it spiked over 16+ volts and fried my ignitors. Don't want to have to buy thoes babies again!!!

Anyone else notice HIGH voltage under normal driving without any accessories on?

I just keep the A/C on and cruise with the windows up. When I want to play, I just cut the A/C off but leave the fan on. 12A with A/C on = no power!

Later,
Bill

Nope. If you are charging more than 14.2 volts or as you were stating that you were hitting 15 volts(verify this with a volt meter, not your gauge) then you have a bad regulator.
