Blown Coolant Seal, $2000 To Fix It, What Do You Do?
#26
If it's a rebuild, it should have the date it was rebuilt stamped on it. Look on one of the housings for RE and some numbers.
If it was me and I had 2200 to buy a car I wouldn't get a Supra. I'd get a 1993 or higher MX-6. They are readily available needing a little TLC for that price. YOu might try rebuilding the enigne yourself. The Apex's are about 30 bucks each. You haven't blown one, so your housings are probably good.
You might just pull the engine apart and take a look at the condition.

Exactly! I'd cut corners if I was in such a tight spot.

Your mom was suggesting an '85 Supra, why not get her to buy the SE instead? Another car is another car but at least you know your way around a ReX.
The other consideration is lately you've been posting a lot of things going wrong with your car. If she gives you money to fix your engine, then something else goes, she'll be pissed and you'll be back to square 1 with a busted car and no $$$

Ok, here's the question.
1) Do you plan on driving an RX7 the next 5 to 7 years?
If you answer yes, then here's what I would do. Sell your 12a powered 7. Don't think twice about it.
Find a sweet, cherry (STOCK!) GSL-SE that hasn't been abused or modified or raced. Preferrably, find one with a blown engine. They should be inexpensive. Then, buy a factory rebuilt, non ported 13b motor. Or one from a reputable company. Stock= 150kmiles +, ported =????
The GSL-SE with engine should be around 300 to 3500 bucks (1000 + 2000 + misc parts), minus what you get for yours. If you keep it stock, don't tinker with it, port it or otherwise screw it up, then you've got a reliable car.
2) If you plan on getting another car eventually that is more practical or meets your needs better, then do it now and bid farewell to your 7. 20 year old cars require constant maintenance and monitoring. Mostly little things but they require it never the less.

I hate to sound like an old man here, but why has no one slapped this kid in the back of his head and told him to use the $2000 to pay off his fines and all the other problems he had last week?!?!?!? Anyone that loves 7's as much you T.J. already has alot of cool points, but WTF man, just last week the world was about to end, no one had any money to help you out, but now your mom's going to give you $2000 for a Supra. Did you clear up ALL of your other problem yet man? Drive your 7 into the ground and use the $2000 a little more wisely.

Is there any problem in continuously topping off the coolant and riding the engine out? Either way, it needs a rebuild... Use the cash from your mom to pay off teh fines, ride the car out till you can afford a rebuild, then go from there...
If the 12A dies before you can afford to rebuild, use the saved cash you've got to snag a beater... Some kinda Honda or an old Subaru... Cruise in that till you can afford a rebuild...
That's the kinda stuff I've gotta do on my Up-Down job status...
Wish I was closer to you... I mighta traded ya engines... I was gonna rebuild anyhow...

Hey man, sorry I missed that nugget of information. I'm glad to see things are looking up for you. So in that case I say go ahead and get your 7 right. And like pele said you should also get a beater, it'll save some grief.

You could get your engine rebuilt by RX-7 Specialties in Calgary, Alberta. Apparently some people have been getting TII engines built and ported for $2500 CANADIAN DOLLARS. I looked into it before and I think for a 12A build and port it was $1500 Canadian. Look into it.

Sweet deal... I got a job interview next week so I might be able to get some cash together and build my RX-7 early this spring... I hope it'll be ready by my birthday (April)...
