Blow gauge/instrument panel fuses

Let me start off by saying I don't do electrical (I found out a long time ago that color blind + electrical = bad).

We recently swapped out the motor on the 84. Since then, the damn thing keeps blowing the fuse that controls the gauges. I've ordered a Haynes, but kinda wanted to see if anyone had suggestions on what to check while I'm waiting for it to get here.

At the same time, the blinkers stopped working. Are they related, or do I need to be trying to find the source of a second problem?

Thanks in advance,

Lisa

I take it you're blowing the meter fuse. Download the 84 FSM in my sig line, it's in black and white at least. Has the full wiring diagrams. Get some help tracing the wire colors.

There is no 84 FSM. Is 85 the same? (there is an 84 wiring diagram - it's kinda like trying to read Greek, but I'll give it a shot).

Either one will work, but I'd use the 84 in case there were any color changes.

seems you have a short. you need to go over all of the wiring that you touched or altered and find out whats grounding itself out and causing this problem. the meter back fuse is an evil one but its not too terrible to trace. check for pinched wires, bare spots in wires, splits, and cuts, and make sure you didnt hook anything up backwards.

I may have fixed the problem, at least for the moment. There was a connector disconnected in the dash, hooked it back up. Also moved some loose wires in the engine compartment, so they weren't touching anything. Gauges seem to have stayed functional longer than they did before, so we'll see.

In the engine compartment, where all the other connectors are, I have on that I can't figure out what it hooks up to. Called my neighbor over for some color-coding, was told it's blue with a red strip on it. Anyone have a suggestion what it goes to?
