Black stuff on rear view mirror

Do any of you have some black stuff appearing on the bottom of your rear view mirror? I don't know what it is, but it seems to be getting worse. I wanted to clean it of but when I try there doesn't seem to be anything on there. I think it may be the "sticky" stuff on the back side that is beginning to be "unsticky". hehe.

Any suggetions would be appreciated...

(btw, you guys think I am **** about my car and all it's little quirks?)

its the reflective backing on the glass falling off. my 79 is "fringed" like that. nothing you can really do short of buy a new one.

it flakes off..old mirrors in houses look the same..

i had the same thing happen on my 79, so i just swapped it with the one on my 80. no more problem..

best bet would be to look in the junk yards.
