The subject sorta says it all.. We're trying to get the brake rotor off the front brakes on the 85 GS. The problem we're seeing is that the bottom bolt for the caliper bracket is sandwiched between the control arm and the rotor.. so there's no real way to get a socket in there.. What do you guys do to remove it? Also: what page is it on in the FSM? According to the Ch 11, "REPLACING BRAKE ROTOR" section, it says to see page 12-4. There is no 12-4 in the version i downloaded. I got it from a link in the FSM..

You can't put a socket on the lower bolt. Use a wrench (17 mm).

There is no need to grind the wrench down either IF the TOP bolt is undone. It'll slide on and off the bolt head easy when you pull the bracket out with your free hand.

 

An offset head wrench is the best tool for the job, with one you can fit the box end completly on the bolt head like it should be, to prevent it from stripping. Also, it can be a bit of a pain to get started again, so take your time reinstalling it so you don't cross thread it. Not sure what page in the FSM it is, I don't have one, but once you get teh bracket off you just pop the grease cap off, remove the cotter pin and nut, then slide it all off. As you've probably noticed the hub and rotor are one piece, so replacing teh rotor also means you need to either replace, or at least swap in the old bearings/races/seals. good luck

Another trick is to remove the rear or both the bolts that mount the strut to the steering arm. Tha allows you to either pivot it out of the way (rear bolt), or slide it out of the way (both bolts). Then its a piece of cake.

i usllr beat the drum with a heavy hammer, the drum usally pops right off!!
