Best power gain from first gen.

hi

i am new to rotories and i was wondering what would get the best power gains from my first gen rx7. i was thinking a motor swap. how hard is a 13b TII swap? also where could i find a turbo 12a motor? any suggestions will be helpful.

Thanks,

dont think how hard, but how $
no question, best bang for buck mod is a header, racing beat preferably.

I find that the search function doesn't help at all if it doesn't actually provide you the money, time, and skills to do whatever you're searching for.

Ask me how I know >.< Well, add "initiative" to that, and then ask me how I know.

well the search button isnt going to do the work for you but with some reading and hard work you can learn alot about your car and alot about mods that you can do for it. I dont know about anyone else but ive learned a ton from refering to old posts...

First of all welcome to the forum. I know alot of people that get their 1st rx and want to do this that and everything else. This may be ok for the experienced technician who has some time in mods. I recommend that you start off slow and learn about your car. Maybe put on the rb header system whcih is definitely the best bang for the buck.
Go thru the vehicle and saftey inspect it. Make sure the brakes are ok, all the fluids are in good condition. Hoses and belts, stat, all tune up items, etc.
Jumping into the deep end, especially engine swaps with turbos unless you have unlimited funds is going to make you more frustrated than happy with owning your car.
And paying someone for all the mods and not learning anything about your vehicle is not my idea of enjoyment. I recommend that you get her5 running good. Hows the paint, the interior. If they need attention concentrate on making the car look good. You will feel better about driving it. Then start going from there. Good luck, rx7doctor

Question short shifter

Hey fb, what mods are they making on the short shifteer. Are they cutting it down and rethreading it or changing the fulcrum point where it enters the shift tower? If you have pics, could you e-mail them to me, thanks rx7doctor

Porting it if you have time to have it down. Otherwise, a Racing Beat Exhaust system (head to tip) is your best bet. You also probably want a better suspension to get the power to the ground.

Damnit, when did I miss the group hug?

hah, just kidding.

Welcome to the boards Rein, btw. I was just teasing about the search function "not doing the work for you". I've actually learned alot just from searching, and most of the problem comes from being intimidated too easily. Spring break is coming up, money is piling up in the bank, and my parents have agreed to help pay for some of the car in order to get it running right.

As I think you will find, most of the 1st generation people are very helpful and friendlier than most 2nd and 3rd gen owners. If you ever need any help, MAKE SURE you use the search function first. If you can't find any info on it after looking, feel free to ask a question.

Once again, welcome to the boards.

Here is a little short list!

12A Turbos are scarse, most of them are located in Japan (no wonder, since they only came out there) If you can get a hold of one, they fit right in. They are 165 BHP

13B EFI from a GLS-SE are a bolt in, providing you can do some wiring, or you could carb it. 135 BHP

13B TII are a common swap, but you will need some mechanical skill, and you will have to do some modification to either the engine (front cover) or chassi (TII sub frame up front) 180-200 BHP

13B 4 port, OK now you are talking old school! My kind of engine. Can be fitted using the rotor housings from a 76-78 13B, and the rest from a 12A. Hard to find used, but you can get them via dealer. Port it, carb it with a IDA, and hey presto, 220 naturally aspirated free reving ponies! MMMM old school!

13B REW From an FD. Will fit, hope you can do some electrical work yourself. Up to 280 BHP in standard trim.

20B From a Cosmo. If you have about 20000 dollars lying around, im sure you can get somebody to do it!

26B, dont even go there $$$$$$$...

You would also need to do some wiring for a TII, would you not?

alright
i guess i should have explainned a little more. i just got the car for a project(my dalily driver is an 03 evo which happens to be for sale) the body on the rx is perfect except paint is fading but there is no dents or rust. its carburated and the engine only has 30,000 miles on it. the interior needs work(new seats). but other than that the car is perfectly straight. i want it to be quick and a blast to drive. i have a couple of freinds that are really into rotary cars one of them has 2 2nd(he also has a RX2) gens that he has done engine swaps and tranny swaps and i helped so i have a little rotary expirence ( i have tons of expirane with other imports just nota whole lot of rx7).i just want a fun little car.i would really llike to make it into a sleeper because hardly anyone here has nice fast 1st gens.

Thanks,
Jay

Ahhh, well, I suppose that, with the experience and go-to help you have, you should be able to do a swap fairly easily. Do a search for TII swap under advanced search -> 1st gen specific. PLENTY of info.

imho, unless you're in love with the 1st gen, i'd just get the 2nd gen and modify that, it would be cheaper and easier me thinks.

2nd gens are heavier and not as cool IMO, FB's/SA's are getting rarer and have a wicked early sports car body styling that a 2nd gen cant match, but remember this is IMO... But I must say a 13bTII swap would be very awesome and unique at the same time

Do what 64mg is doing. put on a camden supercharger, alot easier than doing a turbo setup and alot more unique. rx7doctor

Someone said that the 12at was only sold in Japan. I have to say, that's incorrect.

There was a model sold in Europe called the "Elford." It also had a 12at.
