it might be an astra...the company made a few "prestige" RX-7s back in the early 80's...they were really expensive, but they turbo chaged the engine, and said that the car could take on a Ferrari 308GTS and come out on top. i found this old sales pamphlet a while ago that went over the details...

mazda also made a few convertables and a few targa tops, as a design study, but im not sure if they were ever sold to the public.

it would be neat to get a carfax report on that car and see what its life history has been like.

i don't like either of them.

to me, the silver looks like a wannabe 3rd gen, and the red looks like one of those capris.
all personal opinion, that is.

I don't really like it. Totally takes away from the lines of the 1st gen. And the vert is just fugly.

I know. Its awsome how someone just mentions the Purple car and a riot starts. I probably just opened a can of worms here.

The side pieces on the silver car look good. But like most body kits, it fails to bring any concideration for the original lines of the car into the front or rear moldings. It is like they try to get so radical that they forget what car the kit is to be applied to.

IMHO. Overall, it just looks like another car with a bad taste kit applied.

silver

I prefer the stock look of my FB and dont ever see myself putting any kind of body kit on. That said, this is the most interesting front end mod I have seen on an FB. The more I look at the RX-8ish front end, the more I like it. Side skirts are ok, rear is unattractive. Needs at least a Whale tail for balance. I think with some side work and consideration for for rear end, that front end job could look outstanding. The rest of the car just doesn't keep up with where that front end mod went IMHO.

But to each his own!

Silver 1 looks way to overdone, IMO. it would look good if you had the eyes of a honda driver. Vert has and always will look good but could do with a hell of a lot quieter bodykit than the silver 1. IMO
By the way the "purple 1" looks smooth as besides the shopping trolly wing. Makes it look like those old dodge road runner beasts (sure they went good but bloomen heck they lookd better stock)

The vert is the best looking. Wish I owned it so I didn't have to buy an FC or new tbird.

Personally the silver FB looks like ****! The convert is ok but doesn't look like an FB....Hey I wonder if it's WAY heavier like the FC convertables?

The only kit I find myself liking is the WIDEBODY!! And honestly if I could get 10" wide wheels under the stock setup I wouldn't mess with that either.

Cool

Just digging up an old post!

As for the Vert' it IS real / factory + and very fuckn rare ! Possibly the best condition of any factory 1st Gen vert' left on the planet !
As for the amount made, no one is quite sure, but it was a very small amount.
There was a shop beck in the 80's that converted 1st gens into Vert's, but they were no where near the quality or the look.

Now for the body kit i'de like to show you all this ---

Hi man,

yah, I started this post ages ago. But good dig up...and your S5 is a NICE effort. Job well done. I've recently purchased a 1990 JDM S5 after my absence of my S3 when it got stolen. *sniff*

how much money did it cost to put that kit together. Nice work

Umm dude, those cars were advertised AGES ago, and in Aus. No doubt both have been sold. Check the date of my post, I think it was over a year ago.

Antique Forum Thread???

I never saw this thread originally, so it is new to me. I think the convertible was built using a Mazda 626 boot, anyone know for sure?

I built two, and the silver one used a Toyota Corolla roof section, with the sunroff panel for a boot lid. I spent a lot of time playing with the side view of the top, adjusting the length and the height of the bows to get a shape that looked right. I think my silver one looked pretty much like an 84 RX-7. And as for the weight, my convertibles weighed less than the stock coupe. I put about 50 pounds of steel reinforcement in, but I put it in the right places. The bending and torsional stiffness was pretty good, not adequate for a race car, but fine for normal street use. And both of mine were "One of one".

My red car used the whole rear section from an RX-2.
