depends on the yr model of the engines due to the different diameters of the flywheels thru production yrs.

Any '74 to '92 NA bellhousing can work. Any '74 to '92 NA starter can work (you'll need to grind out some casting flash in the early bellhousing to use an '86 and later starter).

If you have a T2 engine WITH the T2 flywheel, you'll need a T2 bellhousing with T2 starter. Of course if the T2 engine has a rear counterweight and you happen to have an aftermarket light flywheel in the (smaller) NA size, you can use a '74 to '92 bellhousing with a '74 to '92 NA starter and it will work.

I've thought about setting up an engine test stand so I needed to learn about this stuff.

I have a broken '86 NA tranny that I'd like to take the bellhousing off. I'm not sure how to do it, and there are other more important projects ahead of it. It just sits.
