Axle weights? GSL vs drum.

I've heard the disc brake axle weighs more than the drum. The question is HOW MUCH more?

I know someone's gotta have a shipping weight.

I wonder where the weight is.

Clutch packs in the diff? If so, putting LSD in a drum axle kills the weight advantage.
Discs should be lighter than drums so far as weight goes. That should balance out that calipers weigh more than brake cylinders...

Totally forgot about this thread and was gonna start another on the exact same question...

I'm gonna go shopping for a digital bathroom scale to answer this question. I think it'd be nice to compile a list of stock component weights. It'd be useful for shipping as well as parts selection for weight sensitive vehicles.

Cool... Need actual weights though, as in unpacked.

How much of a weight advantage do I get by using the GS drum axle on my Spec7 car than the GSL axle. LSD aside.

I actually have both out right now. Tomorrow while I'm messing around I'll put them on the scale.

LOL, I tried to weigh them. I broke the plasic over the neddle. I couldn't get an accurate reading with just the axle due to balance and so I tried to wiegh myself while holding the axle... maxed out the scale (I wiegh ~200lbs and scale goes up to, I think 260) anyway... no luck. I failed you all.

I'm suprised Lt. Dan hasen't chimed in, not sure if you're remembering the same thing as me, but he said the reason he runs drums is because they are lighter than a disc rearend.

I would imagine the 81-83 rear is a little lighter than the 84-85. I would also guess the drum rear is lighter than the disc. Primarily due to the calipers, as the drums and rotors would weight almost the same.

That's EXACTLY why I'm asking...

Spec-7 cars must weigh no less than 2530 lbs with driver...

According to the brochure, the curb weight is 2345 lbs with A/C. With me at 160 Lbs, that puts me right at the limit.

Ditch the A/C, Ditch the padding and carpet, add roll cage... I'm trying to figure out how to get this dead on weight. I figuer if I'm going to add weight, I may as well have something more functional than a stack of bricks on the passenger floorboard.

Ryans should take care of any extra weight you need.

i picked it up and moved it 30 feet from under the car to my garage. it kinda sucked. and that measurement was on a bathroom scale, balancing it.

Negatory... I need to ADD weight...

I'm 6'1" and 160 lbs... 4% body fat, 180 Cholesterol... This is after eating a stick of butter a day for a week...

So If I'm adding weight to the car, I might as well put that weight into something functional rather than bolting ballast to the passenger floorboard.
