axle question

are the axles on an 84 GSL held in by just the retaining plates on the outer housing?

Yep, but even if you unbolt those you might need extra force to pull them out because they're tightly fitted into the diff.

Yep, you may need a slide hammer to get them out.

In a pinch you can bolt the wheel back up, and kick it from under the car.

If you get under a car without all the proper safety procedures in place then you are a fool. "From under the car," indicates the direction it should be kicked...

Tire trick:
Install the rim inside out but keep the lug nuts loose so the tire will act like a slide hammer
