axle housing exchange

Hi. I have an '85 GSL-SE. I am having some clunking noises happening with the right rear end and took it in to a rotory specialist in Boise. After looking at it, they said the axles, suspension, etc. is all fine. The problem they claim is that the housing is not straight, it's slightly bent. Ok, so I am looking to replace the housing.
I have access to a rear end from an '84 GS. Will my '85 SE axles, third-member, etc. fit in the '84 GS housing? Is the suspension linkage the same? Or will I need to find an SE to make this work?

Thanks,
Ben

I think you will need an 84-85 GSL or GSL-se to swap, the GS is a drum and the brakes will not go on to it.

IIRC they should. So that makes one vote "for" and one "against"

anyone else want to chime in and tell us what the story really is?

I believe they will fit, I just dont think he will have a place to bolt his disk brakes to.

The brakes shouldn't matter if he is swapping the axles out correct ? I know the drums are attached to the axles for the GS. If he is just using the housing then the discs would still go with his axles. Maybe I am wrong but I thought you could pull the disc off the axle to change/resurface them.

There is a bracket that holds the brakes that bolts to the Housing.

Damn, for me it's impossible to answer questions like this definitively in the winter because both my car and eric's car ('84 GS and '84 GSL respectively) are away for winter.

Will not work unless swapped as an entire assembly.

Hades12 has nailed it.

The drum brake axle has a 4 bolt square bracket to bolt the backing plate to. The disk brake axle has a 3 bolt bracket to retain the axle in the housing only. It then has two ears that mount the caliper.

BTW, why would a "slightly bent" housing render a "Clank".
