Auto to 5 spd, pedal assembly

I've been trying to pull out the auto pedal assembly, the bracket goes way up to the steering column. I think that I've pulled off all the nuts, but the thing wont come free. It does wiggle around, but I can't seem to get it out. Anyone whos been through the swap have any tips? I'm going to go back out to try again, any tips welcome.

Thanks

After looking at it some more, I don't know how to pull this out...

There are bolts sticking out from the firewall, so the first assumption is to pull the assembly forward, but theres a metal plate blocking the front of the assembly. The next assumption would be to pull it down, then forward, but the steering column pins it up. In desperate need of help.... what do I have to remove in order to pull the pedals out???

Did you pull out the long bolt that goes thru the pedal assembly. It is feed thru from right to left with the nut being on the far left region. Normally after that is reomoved the pedal drops down. Rx7doctor

I need to remove the whole assembly, with the bracket that goes right up to the steering column.

I'm replacing the auto assembly with the manual assembly. I considered just popping the clutch pedal onto the auto assembly, but there isnt that welded rod on with the clutch sits on for the auto bracket, unless I overlooked it. I will check it again tomorrow. But, i do know people have popped the full thing off doing the auto to 5spd swap.

Thanks for the reply rx7doctor.

there are a couple bolts that hold the steering column up that also go through the pedal assembly, did you make sure to get those as well? even after removing all teh bolts etc its still really hard to get out, the steering column is in the way, as is the dash etc. Good luck

82transam,

Yeah, I definately got those two as well. I noticed that the steering column can sort of be pushed downwards, if I push down to get the pedals out, will I damage anything? I haven't put much force into it fearing something worse coming out of it.

you can push it downward a little without damaging it, thats how I did it, but I also had my dash out when I did this, so it made it a lot easier, I'm not sure how to go about it with all that stuff still there, sorry man.

rx7doctor,

You were right, the brake pedal dropped free when removing that 14mm bolt, and I managed to install the new pedals, even though it took me all day, it was much easier than trying to get that bracket out. Thanks!

Thumbs up bracket

Glad i was right and that it helped you. For all other members alittle info. All 81-85
rx7's are set up for interchangeability on parts. Which means that you can add power everything to a rx that came with no options. the wiring undeer the dash and fuse panels are set up for all of this. Their are many interchangeable parts that
can be used with the correct combination. Also their are many 626 parts that are
interchangeable with our 1st gens. Anyone need help on this, just pm me and i'll do whatever research i can for you. Rx7doctor
