Seems like nobody with 79-83 Cars have put new units in their cars :c
I'm lost for ideas trying to mount mine in the dash, 84-85 is easy because they actually make a kit for them!

what do you mean?? I siad that I put a new system in my 83 rx-7. The new single din reciever/cd player/usb player/android compatible....slipped right into the ancient cassette player's hole. Only complication were the +32 y o plastic connectors.
The JVC ar959 receiver sounds great. Only thing I don't appreciate is a the fancy programmable LED display. Would be great to look at, but I'm driving damnit!! Also, if I had to do it over again, I would not get one with the CD player. USB thumb drive holds a ton of music. Your smart phone can be plugged into the new reciever, and a smart phone holds a ton of music too.
Crutchfield has installation videos, and they have the best selection, and prices.
It was a fantastic upgrade with very little effort.

I've got my head unit wired in and working, it sounds great, but I haven't been able to put the dash panel back on.

I took out the center consul 20 years ago inorder to haul a 9 foot surfboard to the beach. But I didn't have to cut any metal for the new receiver.
You could put the new receiver in the glove box. Keep the old receiver in the dash to confuse thieves.
