Doing the "ATF Trick" to a rotary engine, basically removes carbon build up in the engine and cleans the internal seals. I'm not sure about using it on anything but a rotary engine. If you need further information, just ask.
ATF = Automatic transmission fluid

.Actually, its a fairly well known fact (or so I thought) that people used ATF in piston engines as well when rebuilding them. Well, my uncle does anyway. He soaks stuff in it to remove the carbon (valves, pistons, whatever). Its also used in the rotary engine in a similar way, but without taking it apart.

Yeah, I can't pimp www.mazspeed.com enough. They have some great tech articles there. Basically the detergents in ATF that are meant to keep your slushbox in good shape are also great at removing carbon from internal combustion motors. Just remember, like the article at www.mazspeed.com says, get new plugs after your do it, and do it in a well ventilated area

These first gen guys are the best on the forum - the friendliest, most helpful, most knowledgeable of the bunch. You should respect that, or trade the '80 for a Honda Civic.

You'll find in your experiences with the car, there will be times you'll need help and/or parts for it. This forum, and more importantly the fine people on it, will save you much hassle and $$! You'll do much better to treat these fine folks with the respect that you feel you deserve. I'll bet you really didn't mean to come across as you did, but in the future its a good idea to read your posts carefully before submitting and ask yourself if you should rethink the wording.

ATF can also be used to clean the internals of piston engines. You simply add about a quart of ATF to the oil, you may have to drain a bit of oil out to prevent overfilling, and then drive the car for a couple hundred miles. Then drain it all out and put in new oil. If you want to see what it does, remove the valve cover and look at your valve train. The parts should be really clean and shiny. I was tempted to make a joke about ATF being an abbreviation for "Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms", but I won't.
Doing the ATF trick in my car has helped me out twice. One time it got super flooded and the seals lost compression. After a little ATF, it was running beautifully.
Then the second time after letting the car sit for a few months while working on it, it wouldn't start, so I tried ATF again. And my car has been back on the road ever since.
Make sure you have some new plugs to put in after it quits smoking.
The ATF is great for unflooding, restoring compression, and cleaning the carbon out of the engine.
I'd do it again. hehe

Yeah, I wasn't trying to be a smart *** when I post the definition of ATF. You have to remember that there are a lot of people that come to this site, and when you throw around acronyms like they are nothing. The newbies get lost. Just doing my part to keep people informed.

i remember my first experience with atf in the engine, it was my vacuum modulator (auto tranny) it went out and it was throwing atf to the engine (under vacuum) and i was pretty far away from home and on the freeway. i was about 1hour away so all the way home i was looking like the car in spy hunter(smoke screen!)

I think there was a thread with pictures of the ATF trick in action, but I don't remember how long ago that was. The smoke was pretty impressive.

It varies, but I put an ounce or two (I used a big syringe) in each hole. The trick is to use a small enough tube to stick far enough in the hole, otherwise stuff just runs out. (I'm starting to sweat, here, We're still talking CARS, right
)
Anywho, let it set as long as possible, at least 3 days.
Then fire it up & watch the fun! Take it for about a 5 mile drive to burn it all up, come back & change the plugs, they'll be fouled.
Good to go!
Oh yeah, crank the engine every now and then while its sitting, use the belts to pull it to distibute the ATF all over the inside.

Y'know, there are better alternatives to ATF, like Techron, Amsoil "Power Foam", or good old H2O. ATF gets puked out into the exhaust system where it takes a long time to completely burn out, possibly clogging catalytic converters in the process. Sorry to throw this out so late in the discussion, I got sidetracked makin' jokes, but there it is. -WG
