Thanks

I used a bit of ATF to unseize an engine that had been sitting for 4 years.. other than that I wouldn't recommend it. Despite what I've read about it "restoring engine compression".... I just dont' trust it with all the bad stuff I've read counter it.

I used ATF several times in my car; long story short I ended up having to buy a cat replacement pipe

if it ain't broke, don't fix it

for the amount of good ATF does for carbon build up, you might as well save yourself the $2 it costs. Try this: get an old rotor, or piston, and let it sit in a bucket of ATF for 2 days.... then try to clean it off... still looks pretty carboned up eh?

I would say the only thing the ATF really "works miracles" on is lubing up old, dried up, possibly rusty seals (metal ones) in an engine that has been sitting for a while.

MMO can do everything that ATF can, plus it's more combustible.

If the engine has been running there should be little or no reason at all to ATF or MMO treat it. Your best insurance against carbon buildup is to rev the engine out on a regular basis. That will keep the carbon buildup away. But if you insist on dumping something into a running engine I would use MMO or Techron before using ATF.

What would you prefer me to do, drive around w/o compression? ;-)

Are you sure that your loss of compression is due to carbon buildup?

If it's broke now, ATF can't hurt!!! All you're doing is loosening up the seals. That's all it's for. It's not for removing carbon build-up. At least, I've never heard of it working for that.

Just remember to replace the plugs afterwords.

BTW, The ATF treatment does not always work. You may have to replace the engine.

if you want to have the inside of your engine perfectly clean, the only thing that will do that is water injection. and I dont beleive water injection works on N/A engines, it just screws them up.

When the water evaporates in the engine it steam cleans everything.

Since I started using MMO 6 months ago, I swear by it. Both engines run smooth, and from what I've read, the insides should be clean. Maybe it will take a while by adding 8oz to each refill, but it works and it's benign.

Never tried the ATF, but I think it's just an emergency detergent treatment for old engines. I'm hesitent to try water injection because of the corrosion possibility.

I think MMO contains a detergent that's plenty powerful to un-carb engines, and it's benign because it's a good lube.

Just my 2cents worth.

That's what I'm gonna do. I suspect a little carbon is building up since I stopped driving hard (moving loads of car parts requires smooth driving and all that). It's MMO, so it'll burn lots easier than ATF.

the best way to burn out carbon build up is to get on the freeway and run 100 miles at 85 mph. Do this every so often and you will not have much of a carbon build up problem.

the second best way to avoid carbon build up is to start with a brand new engine and never run it.

try ATF... first... don't put too much... but that stuff smokes alot... covered my block with white smoke... then just keep adding about 5-6 oz.. of MMO every gas fill up... that's it... change the fuel filter too... gotta do that soon... your car should run better after your 10th fill up...

I put MMO in it, and i'm letting it sit for 2 days.

I'm going to replace the spark plugs if i can, around here the NGK's for rx-7's cost $12 per plug. I can't afford that.

Once a plug gets wet it never fires as well.
I would replace them if I could, or swap in an old set during startup if you have one.

Also, the whole thing about letting a rotor sit in a bucket of ATF is false. The thing needs the heat and compression to clean up. It's not going to magically dissolve the carbon just sitting there; it has to be blown out on the hiway a couple times. Still I don't recommend the ATF just for what it did to my cats. That stuff is obviously not meant to be put in an engine.
